MAYHEW, Miss. (WCBI) -Thursday night’s ceremony was only the beginning. East Mississippi Community College’s Mayhew Campus hosted a GED graduation program.

They walked down the aisle in their caps and gowns as family and friends proudly looked on. These graduates know all about the real world, now they have another tool to succeed.

“It took me a long time to get this, I traveled all the way from Kansas City, Kansas. Made it down here in Mississippi, Mississippi helped me a lot. It helped me get on the right track and I thank this program for helping me strive,” said graduate Cameron Davenport.

Men and women from all walks of life received their GED after years of hard work. One graduate says she would never have made it without the support of her family.

“It’s been a long journey but with the people I have in my life, my mother, my motivation, my back up, my success team. They’ve been wonderful to me and I’m so thankful that I have them,” added graduate Gabrielle Conner.

The Launch Pad G-E-D Program was inspired by NASA and created to provide adult students the tools to achieve their educational goals. The program’s classes are also structured to focus each student’s skill set.

“The reason it took me a long time was because I didn’t believe in myself. I have a dream of being a game designer, I wanted to further my education so I can learn more and be able to do more,” said graduate Xavier Washington.

“Once I got kids I decided I was working at the fish plant, then I decided that I wanted to do something better with my life to provide for my family. To buy them the things they need, to buy the things that I need and I decided to come back to school to pursue my education by getting my GED to get a better job,” said Larry Malone.

The graduation was held at the Golden Triangle Campus in the Lyceum.
