JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) -A new study finds absenteeism plays a major role in academic performance in Mississippi. Mississippi Kids’ Counts’ “Present and Counting” also finds a significant correlation between school attendance and family incomes.

The study defines chronic absenteeism as students who are absent for all or part of 18 school days a year. School districts with the lowest rates are more likely to earn A or B state accountability ratings. Across the region, Louisville, Aberdeen, Nettleton, Oxford, Coffeeville and New Albany had absenteeism rates under 10 percent. Meanwhile, Columbus, Starkville, West Point, Monroe County and Tishomingo County districts had rates over 18 percent.
