Mississippi State Univ., Miss. (WCBI) – The 29th Annual Super Bulldog Weekend would not be as good without the pig cooking contest where entries go hog wild trying to capture a first place trophy and bragging rights for a whole year.

Uniquely designed Bar-B-Que grills and expert hog cookers could be seen near Humphrey Coliseum early Friday morning in preparation for the big pork cook-off. They come from far and near for what has become a fun-filled weekend tradition.

“I fly in from Florida every year to help my brother-in-law cook. I’ve been cooking for years, and my nephews go to school here. One is still going to school here,” said Mark Nichols/Florida Hog Cooking Contestant.

“They are judged on their cleanliness of the site, they are judged on the appearance of the meat, the taste of the meat, and the taste of any sauce that accompanies it. If they present a sauce,” said Dennis Joy/Pig Contest Judge.

Using their special seasoning as they prepare for competition, second place just won’t do for Aldy and his brother-in-law who has been first three years in a row…in Florida. Of course, this is Mississippi. And the competition has been serious in past years.

“We’re going for number one this year. Hopefully we’ll get there. We cooking on a new rig this year,” said Kurt Aldy/Pig Cooking Contestant.

Here is a point to ponder this super weekend, even if someone comes last in this pig cookin’ contest, there are certainly no losers when it comes down to great food, fun, fellowship, and entertainment.

“They have concerts this weekend, they have the three game series with Ole Miss this weekend. The Spring game. In the morning, it all ties in, its good family fun. Its really good bulldog fun.”

Mark Nichols “Last year we took second place, this year we’re going to take first place, so,” said Joy.

The Cotton District Festival kicks off at eight Saturday morning. The pig cooking is judged between nine and noon.
