Winona, Miss. (WCBI) – A three-year effort to save a railroad lifeline through Montgomery, Yalobusha and five other counties may get a boost from the state. Lawmakers have included 30 million dollars in a state bond issue to help the seven counties buy and reopen part of the 187-mile-long Grenada Railway. The line runs from Southaven to Canton and its owners closed the stretch from Grenada to Canton in 2011.

Business recruiters say reopening the line is critical to supporting existing industries and attracting new jobs. But the company wants to close the entire line, tear up the rails and sell them for scrap.
