HOUSTON, Miss. (WCBI) — They’ve cut all they can but still can’t make ends meet. Now aldermen in Houston say the city needs a property tax increase.

Aldermen have set a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to discuss the budget and tax proposal with the public.

The budget keeps proposed revenues the same but declining property values in the city mean the a mill doesn’t generate as much money as the current year. The city school district also is increasing its tax request.

The proposed budget would increase the tax rate from just over 6 mills which would mean about $60 a year more on a $100,000.
