ITAWAMBA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — The Itawamba County Grand Jury ruled the death of a decorated Mississippi wildlife officer in May was a tragic accident.

The grand jury cleared 19-year-old Cody Weaver of any criminal wrongdoing in the May 9 death of Sgt. John Collum. The 15-year veteran was killed when he was hit by Weaver’s Nissan Sentra on John Rankin Highway in Fulton as Collum, who was off-duty, responded to a suspicious person call at a neighbor’s home.

Weaver initially was charged with negligent homicide after a trace amount of drugs were discovered in his pockets and his car. But tests later found no drugs in his system.

The grand jury’s review means Weaver faces no other criminal charges.
