COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A special group of volunteers continue a years long tradition of giving today in Columbus. George “Happy” Irby worked at Columbus Air Force Base for years. He saved his tips at the officer’s club to buy gifts for kids. His selfless act of kindness continues to grow, even after his death.

It is the season for giving, and it’s a time for volunteers to know the real meaning of Christmas, which is giving back to the community. That is just what the Happy giveaway is doing.

George Irby and the Happy Foundation hit the streets today to bring joy to some locals.

“We always look forward to it every year,” said Anna L. Usery.

That is right, this isn’t the first year. This tradition was originally started by late George “Happy” Irby. The tradition being that funds raised over the year, will be put back into the community. This year fruit baskets were filled to the rim, and then brought to those in need.

Usery said, “Someone who you think of often, yourself and nobody else seems to think of, and you just want to bless them.”

Making the tradition even more special, the baskets are distributed by Air Force volunteers.

“It speaks to their heart. Each one of them says I am glad I was able to do this,” said Irby.

The list of people who receive the baskets grows every year. It is a blessing and words cannot really express it.
