TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – The city’s Major Thoroughfare Program committee has unanimously approved a 20 year plan for street improvements, and now the plan heads over to the Tupelo City Council for approval.

From now until January, the sub-committee will study and make recommendations on which projects they believe will have the biggest impact on the city.

The committee looks at traffic counts and accident reports to determine which area they should work on.

While improved roads will enhance the city, it will also impact local businesses in those areas. Chairman of the Major Thoroughfare Committee, Gregg Pirkle says he thinks this will also be an economic boost throughout the city.

“The number one goal of the program is to improve traffic flow, and get people from one place to the other but a secondary benefit is economic development, so when we go in we’re mindful of the business and we try to make sure that the business that are there will be enhanced by this improved road.”

Pirkle says the city council has not given them an exact date on when they will make a decision on the proposal, but he’s hopeful on the outcome.
