COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – New Year’s resolutions… we all make them, as we promise ourselves to become a better person in the new year. Perhaps, the most common resolution is to hit the gym, get in shape and lose some weight. But how do you stick to those goals all year around?

It’s no surprise that the beginning of the year is the busiest time for fitness gyms.

“People are trying to get off that winter weight and holiday weight usually,” said Beth Jeffers, Owner of The Fitness Factor.

Many make those resolutions to join a gym and get in shape, but the hard part is sticking to those goals. Beth Jeffers is the owner of the Fitness Factor in Columbus. She has been in the fitness industry for more than 20 years and encourages those hitting the gym this year to keep a few key points in mind.

“Write down your goals and definitely make your goals realistic, as well as think about getting with a fitness professional to set you up on a plan, do something that is fun and interesting that will keep you going so you wont get bored,” said Jeffers.

Starting off slow and steady is also a key point. Jeffers says to take your goals one step at a time.

“The big failures is that people try to change to many things at once. For instance, they decide they are going to quit smoking, lose weight and start exercising and then they kind of blow it in their first week or so and then they say forget it and get back to their old routine, so take baby steps, take one area of your life at a time and try to change it and then move ahead to the next area,” said Jeffers.

Fitness enthusiast, Jimmie Foote, began working out when he was 16-years-old. He encourages everybody wanting to feel better this year to join their local gym.

“Your body gets used to doing it. You just cant come in here and just start lifting weights if your body isn’t used to it, so most of all just a little at a time, and you’ll feel better and better and I think that way you’ll stick with it more,” said Foote.

Foote is also setting his own fitness goals for the New Year.

“My goal is just staying in shape,” he added.

And of course, a vital part of keeping fit throughout the year involves eating the right foods to fuel your body and your resolutions.
