GOLDEN TRIANGLE, Miss. (WCBI)-With summer temperatures on the rise, there’s no doubt your wallet is feeling the heat.

Mississippi Summers can leave cold natured people searching for a place to cool off.

An air conditioner can bring comfort but many electric customers are finding the cool costs more than they bargained for.

“It’s always a good time to kind of take a look around at your house and see some of the things that you might be able to do to kind of help yourself a little bit on your power bill,” says Jon Turner.

Now, the Tennessee Valley Authority is teaming up with 4-County Electric and other Golden Triangle utilities to help slim down customers’ bills.
“Check your windows and doors make sure that your weather stripping is good and tight. Want to make sure your cocked around perimeters of your windows,” says Turner.

Some ideas. Do laundry after dark, turn lights off when leaving a room and bump your thermostat up a few degrees because it affects 50 percent of your electric bill.
“For every degree or so that you turn your thermostat up you can save up to about three percent on your electric bill that month,” says Turner.

To help customers identify wasted energy, TVA is offering a few programs.

“Do it yourself energy audit. You can fill out information complete it about your home, print a report and get an energy saving kit directly in the mail,” says David Sparks.

But if you prefer getting a professional opinion, TVA has just the thing.

“The evaluator will give you info about things you can do to lower your power bill in your home. Then, you can make improvements. We pay half of the first thousand dollars. Plus, we give you the fifty dollars back,” says Sparks.
The electric providers say when you use the energy saving tips, there should be a smaller bill and more money in your wallet.
