LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — It may be up to a California lab to determine what ingredient may have contributed to the death of a 33-year-old Lowndes County man earlier this week.

Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant says an autopsy on John Ross Chism gave no clear indication of the cause of death.

Chism died Monday night after being hospitalized Sunday after smoking synthetic marijuana commonly called spice. Merchant says the state crime lab likely will seek analysis from a California lab that has found between one and 10 compounds that are common to spice deaths nationwide. Many come from the Grand Cayman Islands.

Chism’s funeral is 2 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbus.
