TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s been officially open for less than a year, but the Tupelo Aquatic Center is already drawing some big time events.  Monday, the Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau and Parks and Recreation Department announced that the Aquatic Center will host USA Swimming’s 2016 Southern Zone Senior Championship in August 2016.

In just under a year of operation the Aquatic Center has won bids for eight events. The Southern Zone Senior event will be the largest to date, and will expose the facility to a larger audience.

“Hosting such an event puts our name on the map, so people in thirteen states in the Southeast are going to come to our facility, and see what a nice facility we have. And they are going to try to get one in their hometown.”

Nearly 600 swimmers participated in Last year’s Senior Championship in Fort Myers, Fla.
