TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Students at one Tupelo elementary school are learning about nutritious foods, in a fun way.

This morning, Thomas Street Elementary students were able to see a dancing and singing Tomato and Carrot. It was all part of the kickoff of a program called “Farm to School.”

It is meant to teach students how food is grown and also about which foods to eat for optimum nutrition and performance.

Organizers say it’s also about teaching children to change their eating habits at an early age.

“Hopefully that obesity trend will turn, we would love for Mississippi to be known for having healthy citizens and not always having citizens who are obese and overweight.”

Students at Thomas Street are also planting a garden and they have also been given a big donation of sweet potatoes from Topashaw Farms in Vardaman.
