TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — First graders in Tupelo Public Schools are learning some life saving lessons.

The annual Safe Splash program is going on at the Tupelo Aquatic Center. That program allows all first graders to spend one week learning the basics of swimming.

Students will return for another week next fall as second graders and organizers say it is a great way to get youngsters accustomed to the water.

“At their age, they learn safety around the pool,” Program Coordinator Barbara Aguirre said. “Some of them will learn how to swim, others will learn the beginning parts of lessons; and what we have found is when they come back as second graders, a lot of them do a lot better.”

This week Carver students are taking the classes. Then Parkway and Thomas Street elementary schools will close out the program.
