TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – The Tupelo City Council will soon learn which projects an engineering firm is recommending for the next phase of street improvements.

The Major Thoroughfare Committee met this afternoon to discuss a study looking at expected needs and traffic patterns for the next 20 years.

Phase 5 of the Major Thoroughfare Plan is almost complete. Next year, voters will decide whether to approve Phase 6, funding road improvements over a five year period.

“We look at where the roads have been improved so far, you have out by the parks, that really improved the traffic flow, by the mall, that was a two lane road at the beginning of this program, so you have that going to a five lane road as well and we’re even looking at expanding in the mall area.”

The Major Thoroughfare Program receives about 4 million dollars a year from a 10 mill tax. Projects should be selected by January.
