TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — A local newspaper is helping collect supplies for area school students.

Boxes are set up in the lobby of the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal for folks to drop off backpacks and other supplies.

The drive came about after an employee of the paper heard that some students at Tupelo’s Pierce Street Elementary needed supplies.

Individuals can drop off supplies and even designate the materials for Pierce Street, or any other nearby school.

“Some of the kids don’t have backpacks or have tore up backpacks, or they just weren’t able to get all supplies they needed,” Inside sales consultant Tracy Murphree said. “It kind of touched me. I grew up in that area, so I wanted to see what we could do to help them out.”

The supply drive runs through Tuesday at the newspaper’s offices on South Green Street in Tupelo. Those who donate will get a two-week subscription to the paper.
