TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI)  -MDOT equipment operators took part in their version of a “roadeo” Thursday morning.

The annual MDOT Roadeo was held at the District One headquarters in Tupelo. Nearly 100 equipment operators and drivers took part.

They had to maneuver through six obstacles and challenges, which included parallel parking, keeping truck tires in a straight line, and using a backhoe to grab golf balls, and place them in containers, all to test their skills.

Organizers say it’s a fun way to promote safety and friendly competition.

“They get to learn a little bit about how to operate the equipment better but also because we really feel that safety is first and time to understand how to safely operate their piece of equipment too.”

Winners from the event advance to the state meet this summer on the coast. From there the top drivers head to Southeast Regionals later this year.
