TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — 35 high school students in Tupelo will get real world experience as they take part in a summer job program sponsored by the city. Monday morning, the fourth “Plant A Seed” summer job program kicked off at Tupelo City Hall. The initiative is the brainchild of Councilman Willie Jennings, who wanted to do something to help teenagers gain experience while also helping various departments. The 9th through 12th graders will work 20 hours a week in departments such as administration, fire and police and other offices.

“I think it would be a good , opportunity for me to show how responsible I can be and to show my maturity,” said Kelzie Davis.

“I will be working here at city hall with Mayor Shelton,” said Zoe Wright. “Hopefully I will be helping him around the city and just, like to see the background of Tupelo and how he works and functions.”

The young people get paid minimum wage. The “Plant A Seed” program runs for eight weeks.
