TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Applications are being taken for an annual initiative that helps provide Christmas presents for kids in families struggling to make ends meet.

All this week, the Tupelo Salvation Army is taking applications for its Angel Tree program. The program allows members of the community to buy Christmas presents for children in low income families.

Organizers will need Social Security cards for each person in the family, birth certificates for the children, household bills, any income sources and proof of job searches for those who are unemployed.

The annual Angel Tree program fills a huge need for families throughout the area.

“You look at the statistics and it says everybody is living paycheck to paycheck,” Susan Gilbert with the Tupelo Salvation Army said. “And when you do that, and it comes Christmastime, it’s sort of hard to take money you don’t have to buy Christmas for your kids.”

The program is for households with children from 1-12 years old.

The Junior Auxiliary is helping those families with older children.
