COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — In honor of those who serve in time of need, agencies, leaders, and workers from throughout the Golden Triangle are showing their appreciation to United Way agencies by lending a helping hand.

A team of volunteers from WCBI TV is leading the effort on the day set aside to remember the events surrounding 9-11 and the thousands who died at the hands of al-Qaeda terrorist. The WCBI Team is serving at The Salvation Army in Columbus.

“Yeah, I think its a great way to give back to the Salvation Army. They do so much for our community, specially after the tornadoes we see them giving back to everyone. And its an every day thing for them, but they do need help and this is a great way to help them,” said Jillian Garrigues, WCBI News Anchor-Reporter.

“And also remembering 9-11 and those fallen heroes. They decided to do volunteer work in order to honor the first responders and its good to be here,” said Shauntay Hinton, WCBI News Anchor-Reporter.

At the Palmer Home in Columbus, Team Blaze 56 from Columbus Air Force Base is helping by nurturing poinsettias in their greenhouse that will be sold to benefit that charitable agency. Just across town, helping hands bags up rice to be given to elderly and low income clients. And at Loaves and Fish, Cadence Bank Employees are in the kitchen, adding to the list of businesses taking a negative event and being very positive…13 years after a major disaster.

“Show the community that we are here that we care and to be able to come in and do some deep cleaning that hasn’t gotten, you be able to be done throughout the year. So I think its a very important thing,” said Lauren Philley, Cadence Bank.

So, for all the people willing to roll up their sleeves on this special day of observance, the United Way along with it’s member agencies, and these volunteers will help keep the service and sacrifices of then and now….forever in our thoughts.

“Their mission here is an amazing, you know asset to the community, so I think its very important that we give to all of the people who give all year round,” said Philley.

The United Way’s Day of Service was followed by the United Way Campaign kickoff Luncheon at the Boys and Girls Club.
