VARDAMAN, Miss. (WCBI) — Four dog bites in a week has Vardaman aldermen taking action.

Following a report from Vardaman Police Chief Kenny Scott Tuesday, aldermen directed City Attorney Paul Moore to draft an ordinance that holds pet owners accountable.

The proposal would define vicious dogs as those that attack people or other pets, or are menacing.

Pet owners would be given a warning on a first offense, and then face steep fines ranging from $500-$1,000 for repeat violations.

The board could act on the new law as early as June 17.
