VARDAMAN, Miss. (WCBI) — It works for Vidalia onions, Florida oranges and Wisconsin cheese. Now Vardaman sweet potatoes want it too.

Some Vardaman sweet potato growers want to develop a certification mark that would verify sweet potatoes are Vardaman grown. They worry others are buying imitations grown elsewhere and claiming they were grown in Vardaman to take advantage of the region’s name.

The Vidalia region of Georgia safeguards its brand with a similar certification that has proved successful.

Supporters of the idea say it could improve marketing and promotion of its biggest cash crop.
