VERNON, Ala. (WCBI) – The community of Vernon celebrated an old tradition on Saturday at the annual Vernon Street Fair.

The town of Vernon has been celebrating their annual fair for decades. The streets of downtown were filled handmade crafts, antique cars, and carnival food. Many residents have been coming to the event for as long as they can remember.

“I like coming because you get to see all the people you grew up with. It’s like a big family reunion. It’s an annual event for me. I try to come every year,” said Leigh Anne Webster, 30 year resident of Vernon.

Through the years, the street fair has brought in more than just local spectators. Vendors from across the state come to sell their goods at the fair. Randy Webster and his wife have been traveling to fairs across the state for three years.

“We enjoy getting out and meeting folks and its just a way to spend some energy and do something else after we get home from our regular jobs,” says Webster.

For the city of Vernon, the street fair serves as a chance to reconnect with old friends and look forward to new ventures. The city council is currently looking to increase industrial production in the city and upgrade educational facilities.

“Things are picking up and I’m certainly glad to be part of it,” said Robert Covington, former mayor of Vernon.

Upcoming projects include a new lumber company and a larger school for preschool students. Council members are hoping these and other  additions will increase employment. The community of Vernon plans to continue to honor tradition by hosting the annual Street Fair.
