VERNON, Ala. (WCBI) — New businesses, one new industry and other expanding, a city museum… it all adds up to good news for Vernon, Alabama. And that means Mayor Glenn Crawford finally gets paid. When he took office 17 months ago, the former businessman promised not to take a paycheck until city revenues were up 20 percent and signs of economic growth were evident. An audit report to aldermen Tuesday night showed those goals have been met.

K and S Lumber officially is bringing 20 jobs over the next year to the city’s industrial park and Marathon Equipment has added 30 jobs. Eight new businesses also have opened. City leaders say the town is developing an attitude that it can grow.
