VERONA, Miss. (WCBI) — A Verona man is behind bars after turning himself into authorities in connection to a fatal shooting.

33-year-old Roy Ray Merritt was at the scene of the Verona shooting, which resulted in the death of 41-year-old Rodney Lowery.

Authorities say Merritt turned himself in Monday afternoon, and has been cooperative in the investigation.

Today, he is charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, with his bond set at $15,000.

“We do know, through all the information, the witnesses and working with Mr. Merritt that he is a convicted felon, and we know that at some point in time during this altercation he did possess a firearm,” Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson said. “Whether he used it or not is something we’re still looking into. But we do know that he did possess a weapon.

“It’s time for the violence to stop,” Verona Police Chief Anthony Anderson said. “These young people — actually we’re losing two lives. We’ve lost the young man that lost his life, and also we’re are losing the young man that actually is going to serve some time in prison. But at the same time, these individuals have family. So, it not only affected these two individuals, it affected the whole neighborhood. So, it’s time to stop the violence.”

The investigation continues, and anyone with information is urged to contact authorities.
