VERONA, Miss. – (WCBI) Verona residents say they want answers. City leaders say Police Chief Bill Johnson verbally resigned, after only eight weeks on the job.

Community members say that was a red flag, and a large group attended tonight’s meeting in protest.

The chief says he resigned because Aldermen won’t stop meddling in everything from hiring to patrols.

The town in southern Lee County has changed police chiefs about every 15 months during the last 10 years.

Mayor Robert Trice says he welcomed the large crowd, saying that residents should be more involved in city affairs. The board took no action at the meeting.
