Video: Vietnam Veteran Gets Long Overdue Commendations

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – A war hero receives long overdue honors, thanks to the efforts of the late Congressman, Alan Nunnelee. During a brief ceremony at Tupelo’ s Calvary Baptist Church, Congressman Trent Kelly presented the “Silver Medal” the “Air Medal” “National Defense Medal” the “Vietnam Service Medal” with two bronze service stars and the “Combat Infantryman Badge.”to Dr. Ed Deuschle .

Deuschle was in the 101st Airborne Division when battling the VietCong in May of 1970. The battle was so intense, helicopters could not land, and Deuschle had to jump out of the chopper. He received a medical discharge, and was not recognized for his heroism on the battlefield.

“It’s been 45 years in the making, I never thought it would happen , but I’m thankful to my nephew, former Congressman Alan Nunnelee who gave the order to have this investigated and for his staff who followed it up and I’m honored to have these awards presented by a grateful nation today.”

Deuschle went on to become a Baptist pastor. He and his wife just celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary.
