PONTOTOC, Miss. (WCBI) — Thanks to the efforts of some generous volunteers, the daughter of a wounded police officer will have more room to play.

On Saturday morning, Brewer Tree Service sent a 10-man crew to Tupelo Police Officer Joesph Maher’s house to cut down nearly 40 trees in his front yard.

Maher was shot by a fleeing bank robber on December 23, in the same incident that killed fellow officer Sgt. Gale Stauffer.

Saturday’s event is part of the community-wide campaign to help the families of both officers.

Maher says he is overwhelmed by the support.

“We’ve truly got a blessing today from the Brewer tree service,” Maher said. “They’ve come and we needed alot of trees removed from our house and our front yard. We’ve had several leaning toward our house that needed gone and we’re truly thankful they’re blessing us and taking care of us like they are.”

Maher says he is doing well and taking things a day at a time.

Organizers say this would have been a $10,000 job.
