MACON, Miss. (WCBI) — Weather conditions have a direct bearing on the decision school officials make, whether or not to close school.

There is mostly rain and a chance of frozen precipitation with a Monday forecast in North Mississippi. When there is the slightest threat of adverse weather conditions, in Noxubee County a team and a plan is already in place.

“We are all in constant communication with our surrounding school districts. We have a communicatory and we constantly call each other to get updates. The Mississippi Department of Education also keeps an eye on us and the national weather service,” said Superintendent Kevin Jones/Noxubee County Schools.

Children in any school district need academic instruction for success, but if there is the slightest chance of any danger, Superintendent Jones is immediately in touch with one of his favorite sources.

“Your meteorologist is very supportive and we always contact WCBI in addition to all the people we already contact. We make your, we stay in constant communication with your meteorologist,” said Superintendent Kevin Jones.

“We can only guide them and tell them the best that we could possibly think, you know, or the best our, our best opinion on what may happen. Of course that might change, but again all we can do is guide them,” said Isaac Williams/WCBI Meteorologist.

One important member of the school safety committee includes a transportation supervisor who is familiar with Noxubee County roads like the back off his hand.

“He is aware of the road conditions, he is aware of how long it takes each individual route to get home, the conditions of the roads. We have to look at, we are rural, so we have a lot of gravel roads. We have several bridges. So we have to take those kinds of things into consideration as well,” said Superintendent Kevin Jones.

When transporting students, waiting time at bus stops are closely monitored when there are inclement weather conditions.
