Webster County, Miss. (WCBI) – Now that Eupora and Webster County voters have said yes to building a new courthouse somewhere in Walthall, County Supervisors and Walthall Village officials are working together to make that happen.

For Webster County Supervisors it was the first meeting after what they see as a favorable non-binding referendum vote to construct a new courthouse to replace the one destroyed by fire.

“And of course we are in the process right now of trying to lock down a location to put the courthouse,” said Paul Crowley/Webster County Supervisor.”

But exactly where is up for debate. The county would trade the current courthouse as is, to the village in exchange for some or all of 14.1 acres at the intersection of Highway 50 and Nine. Walthall leaders say they want the current site plus an undetermined amount of cash.

“Is that the village is willing to go to the table with us so to speak. And sit down and talk about the possibility of us using some of their property for the site of the new courthouse,” said Crowley.

While the negotiation over the land continues, supervisors are still waiting to see how much insurance money they will have to work with.

“Going to put a process in motion this week maybe to expedite this. Hopefully and also with that in the very near future, that we’ll know the funds that we have to go forward with,” said Crowley.

Webster County Supervisors took no action on the contents of a letter detailing options from The Village of Walthall that was read out loud during the meeting. The Webster County Courthouse burned on January 17th 2013.
