Video: West Point Patriarch Harrell Dies

WEST POINT, Miss.(WCBI)–One of West Point’s valued citizens has died. Robert Harrell, the patriarch of the Harrell Family and father of Clay County Circuit Clerk Bob Harrell has passed away.

West Point and Clay Countians are loosing a very special citizen. Long time contractor, outdoorsman, and family man Robert Harrell Senior died monday of natural causes in the city he had come to love so much.

“Robert Harrell never met a man he didn’t like and I never met a man that didn’t like Robert Harrell,” said Robbie Robinson/Mayor & Friend.

A permanent fixture at West Point Rotary Club on Thursdays, Harrell has seen rotary members come and go. Members who are readily greeted by a familiar hearty handshake and a smile.

“We’ve rolled through presidents, vice presidents, and secretaries over the last 14-15 years. But Robert has been the sargent-at-arms and a mainstay at that for probably the last couple decades,” said Jamie Ballard/West Point Rotary President.

It was during the accidental death of his grandson James Thomas, that love from rotarians were shown to Harrell and his family.

“We as a rotary club wanted to do something for his family. And so we made him a Paul Harris Fellow, his grandson. Thats just a tribute, we wanted to do for his family,” said Jamie Ballard.

Sociable, caring, and accommodating, always wearing a smile. It appears Robert Harrell Senior is sure to be missed.

“When we had the golf tournament, the ladies Handa Cup last year, he allowed Old Waverly to use his, literally his front yard for parking and entrance for all that,” said Jamie Ballard.

“Well, as a friend of the family, but a mayor and spokesman for the community my heart felt sympathy goes out to the Harrell Family,” said Robbie Robinson.

Funeral services for Harrell will be held Thursday 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of West Point. Visitation is set for Wednesday at the church between 4 and seven pm. Robinson Funeral Home in charge.
