Miss. (WCBI) – Mississippi white-tail deer hunting season using guns with dogs is about to come to an end. But right now, some hunters in our viewing area are going after their quota and they are shooting off their mouth about this year’s deer harvest.

Deer hunters in the state are on a fast track, wanting to bring down does and bucks this holiday season. Some got an early start even on Thanksgiving morning.

“Went out about a quarter to six I guess. Yeah it was a good morning, good frost. Deer running around pretty good this morning. I went and got me a doe for the freezer, that way I get that out of the way. And be ready to buck hunt after that,” said Chess Ming, Columbus Deer Hunter.

Last year Mississippi hunters harvested some 273,000 deer, they are allowed to collect five does and up to three bucks per license year.

“Yesterday we killed two eight points. And that’s off a place I own on Hwy 8. And, grandson took one in the morning and I took one in the evening,” said Red.

For Aberdeen deer hunter Herbert Red, spending time in a deer stand is a time of bonding with family. Let him tell it, the younger the better.

“This grandson of mine, I started him out when he, I had to put him up on my shoulders and tote him into the woods. And I started him hunting then and he has been hunting through the years and he has killed some mighty big deer through the years you know,” said Red.

“Drew Newman, Tyler Newman, and Drew Killed him a doe, me and him last weekend,” said Ming.

Ming’s grandson six year old Drew Newman is evidence you don’t have to be an adult to bag the big one.

Deer hunting with guns is off to a good start, hunting license are good for one year from the date of purchase.
