STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – The American Legion Girls State is in full swing on the campus of Mississippi State University in Starkville. Teenagers from around the state of Mississippi are learning just how government works on the state and local level.

The guest during Tuesday’s girls state conference brought up an interesting question when she asked, how many presidents of MSU have ever been female. Not to diminish the success under male leadership, she just presented the young girls with an alternative possibility.

Girls State conference attendees are exited and pumped up over the possibilities of taking the lead in the arena of politics.

“Its inspiring, you see them that they are in a new world and they are out here as women being strong,” said Katie Niemeyer/Girls State.

“Women actually make up the popular vote. And but ironically not the ones that are running. So, this year is actually the first we’ve seen such a large amount of candidates actually be female,” said Brooke Cullen/Girls State Director.

Special guest and Gubenatorial Candidate Dr. Valerie Short,is one of two women seeking the office of state governor.

And, this year on the national stage, there is Hillary Clinton a serious presidential hopeful.

“Women are opinionated but that is not a bad thing. Women have strong very strong feelings. And they are passionate about what they do. They just don’t realize that they have a voice just like men do,” said Brooke Cullen/Girls State Director.

With examples of great potential female political leaders, one could emerge from this group that could occupy the white house, not as just First Lady.

“Maybe so, first female, thats a lot but you know aim high thats what they taught us this week,” said Britton Webb.

State Auditor Stacy Pickering and Attorney General Jim Hood are scheduled to speak at Girls State this week.
