Video: Yard Clean-up and Windy Conditions Fuel Grass Fires
Northeast, Miss. and West Ala. (WCBI) – Sunny weather and mild temperatures make for a good time to clean up the yard. But, if burning leaves is in your Spring cleaning plans, fire crews encourage you to be careful.
Firefighters across the region traveled to Pontotoc County to battle grass fires. Over 35 acres of land have been scorched. High winds can fuel the flames and carry embers beyond the fire zone, causing fires to race out of control.
Even though rain is in the weekend forecast, it may not be enough to lower the risk. That’s exactly what happened to a West Alabama woman Friday afternoon. Firefighters were called to County Road 75 near Ethelsville just after 3:00PM.
The homeowner was burning brush behind her home when the windy conditions sent the blaze out of control, toward neighboring homes. Macedonia Volunteer Firefighters were able to contain the fire to a small area.
