Tupelo, MS (WCBI) – Thousands enjoyed a hearty meal of soups from area restaurants and other organizations on Wednesday, while helping the salvation army.

The annual “Empty Bowls” fundraiser featured soups from more than 60 restaurants, civic groups and churches.

There was a silent auction, bake sale and pottery was also for sale. It all benefits the Tupelo Salvation Army.

Maj. Sue Dorman has seen a steady increase in those needing food, shelter and other assistance. The “Empty Bowls” fundraiser helps meet a lot of those needs.

“We do three meals a day, seven days a week in our soup line , and then we have our lodge that we feed and then we do food boxes we give out everyday for those that come in who need emergency food for a few days.”

Dorman says recent cold weather has caused even more to seek shelter at the lodge, which has been above capacity for months.
