Columbus, Miss. (WCBI) — The Firework on the Water event is one of the biggest Columbus will see throughout the year and it takes a lot of people-power to get it up and running.

Organizers for the event say that there were about 60 volunteers who helped make the event possible for this year’s Independence Day.

Many of the volunteers also happened to be airmen and women from Columbus Air Force Base.

“Without [the help] really none of this could’ve happened…”, says Patricia Brock, executive director of the local The United Way, “…folks were out here Thursday, Friday, setting things up, getting ready, putting lines on the areas for parking and honestly you can’t do anything of this magintude without a large number of volunteers.

“This is the strength of America’s Air Force is the quality of our Airmen…”, says Columbus Air Force Base Chief of Public Affairs Sonic Johnson, “…I mean they are citizens, they believe in coming to the communities and making it better to live here.”

Johnson also said that he appreciated the airmen and women for volunteering on their off-days.
