Voters in Two School Districts Head to Polls Tuesday

OKOLONA/LOWNDES CO., Miss. (WCBI) — Voters who live in two school districts will decide Tuesday on paying for major improvements.

The Okolona School Board wants to issue $2 million in bonds for renovations to its Central Offices, a new football stadium, and all of its buildings. Superintendent Dexter Green says the future of the district is now dependent on voters.

“It will benefit the boys and girls and students who attend schools in Okolona. It is a very historic day for the city of Okolona. Okolona has never passed a bond issue. And we are hoping and praying that it could take place, beginning tomorrow,” says Superintendent Green.

Meanwhile, Lowndes County Schools have a referendum on a $47 million bond proposal.

Those bonds will pay for a new $20 million New Hope High School, major athletic and school upgrades to all three campuses, and computers for every student for the next two years. The New Hope High project includes converting the existing high school into a middle school and rerouting traffic.

A $10 million dollar Career Tech Center, that would be located off of Lehmberg Road, is also a big part of the plan.
