WEST POINT, MIss. (WCBI) — Work could start by the end of the year on a major cog in West Point’s job recruitment engine.

The city is advertising for contractors to refurbish the waste water treatment plant the city bought from Bryan Foods three years ago for $1. The contract for the estimated $7 million project could be awarded by the end of November and work could begin by the end of the year.

The city is saving millions of dollars through the deal with Bryan because building a new plant from scratch would have cost anywhere from $18 million to $30 million.

The new plant will greatly increase the city’s sewage treatment capacity for new or expanding industries. The facility will replace a 30-acre lagoon that has been a mainstay in the city’s wastewater treatment system. The lagoon no longer meets environmental regulations being phased in over the next several years.
