Weir Family Questions Curriculum

CHOCTAW COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A Weir High School family claims their student is the best of the class this year. But she may not walk away with the title, while school officials were not available for comment Thursday, the family says a breakdown in communication could of costly.

Weir Attendance Center senior Coidasha Woodard has a 3.8 GPA and is at the top of her class. Her school counselor just told her that it’s a state requirement to take a foreign language elective. Now, she might not be valedictorian.

“My baby has been working really hard towards this ever since she was in 9th grade, that was her goal. And to wait until two weeks before she graduated to tell her she’s at the finish line and she can’t cross first, that’s unacceptable to me,” said father Crey Hardin.

Valedictorians at Weir earn a $500 scholarship they can use toward college. Coidasha has already been accepted to Mississippi University for Women and is upset she didn’t know sooner.

“I should be the one talking and not them giving the speech. Make sure you have all your classes before you get to the 12th grade and know all the requirements even if your counselor doesn’t know,” said Coidasha.

Adding gravity to the situation, this will be the last senior class to graduate from Weir.

“It’s a state requirement that you should’ve taken an elective and because you didn’t take this elective, you’re not going to be crowned valedictorian. I think it’s outrageous,” said grandmother Luvenia Glass.

“Any little money would help and to have that taken away from her, I don’t think that’s fair at all,” added father Hardin.

The school board will consider the issue Monday night and the policy will be reviewed. The student who would be named salutatorian is also having the same problem and is Coidasha’s cousin.
