West Point Police Investigate Possible Suicide

WEST POINT, Miss. (Press Release) — The West Point Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that left one man dead from what appears to be a self-inflicted wound.

At 1:30 p.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to a residence at 3080 Lone Oak Drive in reference to a welfare check. According to a report officers were prompted to do the check after a photo was posted on social media of the victim striking a suggestive pose. Police would not disclose who called authorities after witnessing the photo.

Upon arrival police noticed that the home was not locked and the body of a man was found inside. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene. Shortly thereafter the County Medical Examiner was summoned. The man was pronounced dead on the residence.

The deceased was the only person at the home and there were no witnesses at the time of the incident. The name of the deceased is not being released by the police pending notification of the family. According to the police report a single shot shotgun was found in very close proximity to the victim as well as a note. Police also declined to give details of the contents of the note.

“The evidence strongly suggests that the man died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound but we are waiting on the coroner’s report before closing the file on this case,” West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley said.

Police also declined to comment on the area of the body that was affected by the shotgun blast.

This case is still under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the West Point Police Department at 662-494-1244.
