West Point Police Investigate Shooting

FROM WEST POINT POLICE

WEST POINT, Miss. — Shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday, West Point police officers were dispatched to Town Creek Apartments in reference to shots being fired. Officers immediately responded and were told by residents of the complex that a victim had already been transported to the North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point.

The police have declined to say whether there are actual witnesses to this crime.

According to Police Chief Tim Brinkley of the West Point Police Department, “Those who witness these acts are reluctant to come forward because of fear of retaliation. When this shooter is arrested he may be surprised to learn if a witness provided information leading to his arrest.”

The victim, whose name is not being released, reported to police that he didn’t recognize the shooter and doesn’t know why they were shooting in his direction.

A preliminary investigation has revealed the victim got into the black Maxima that transported him to the hospital as shots were being fired.

Evidence indicated multiple shots were fired and police later recovered a vehicle at another apartment complex matching the description of the vehicle that transported the victim to the hospital.

The vehicle appeared to have damage to the back windshield and trunk area that was consistent with bullet holes.

The driver of the vehicle has been questioned by police but has not been charged with any crime.

Evidence has been collected at the scene and investigators are in the process of compiling a list of suspects.

The victim of this shooting is still undergoing treatment for his injuries at the hospital in West Point. At least one bullet hit the victim in the neck but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

This crime is still under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151 or the West Point Police Department at (662) 494-1244.
