WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI)- A proposed tourism tax increase has passed in West Point…but just barely. With the absentee ballots counted, City Clerk Lela Jack says 373 residents voted for raising the hotel, food, and beverage tax from one percent to two percent. 242 residents voted against the measure. Tax issues require approval from 60 percent of voters and this passed with 60.6 percent. Jack says the results will be certified on Wednesday (9-12). The money will be used primarily to fund improvements for the West Point parks and recreation facilities as well as for entertainment. That will include things like soccer fields and tennis courts, or whatever city leaders determine needs to be done to improve tourism.
