CALHOUN CITY, Miss. (WCBI)- The next potential presidents have already visited Iowa and New Hampshire.

And Up next is South Carolina and Nevada.

While the focus is now on those two states, Democrats here in Mississippi are preparing for a caucus of their own.

Saturday, residents in the Magnolia state were busy electing delegates and alternates in their Democratic Precinct Caucus.

“Today is kind of like our first big step into seeing who Mississippi democrats want as a viable contender for the presidential election,” member of the Mississippi State Executive Committee for Democrats Kegan Coleman said.

During Saturday’s precinct caucus, residents discussed and elected who they wanted as a delegate.

“The way the process works is, they come in this meeting and announce their candidacy, that they’d like to serve as a delegate and move on to the congressional convention, or they can go ahead and fill out to serve on the national convention as well to be voted on a later date,” Coleman said.

After being successfully elected in the precinct caucus, candidates will move on to the county conventions.

“Then if you’re vetted successfully at the county level election, you’ll move on to the congressional convention then on to the state and serve on the national convention,” Coleman said.

However, if a candidate fails to get elected at the congressional convention, there is still some hope.

“And if you’re not successful at your congressional caucus there’s still an opportunity for you to get elected at your state convention as well,” Coleman said.

Once successfully elected at the state convention, the candidate will then become titled as a National Convention Delegate.

“You’ll be able to participate in all of the festivities at the national convention and you’ll be able to sit on the floor,” Coleman said.

And at this position these democratic leaders will then have a strong voice in electing the next president.

“As a whole, as a party as a whole, that’s our definite end game is to make sure that a democrat is sitting in the white house once we’re finished,” Coleman said.
