WINONA, Miss. (WCBI) — Winona aldermen are a step closer to establishing a policy for appointing school board members.

During a meeting Friday, Mayor Jerry Flowers outlined guidelines and asked aldermen to offer ideas before the board finalizes the rules. Under the proposal, the school board would recommend at least two people to fill vacancies. Those people would have children in Winona schools, have a demonstrated interest in education, have at least a high school diploma or GED with some higher education preferred.

The aldermen likely will approve the rules at the their meeting the first Tuesday in August.

The need for a formal policy arose after aldermen came under fire because a woman never had been appointed. That changed when the board named a woman to fill a vacancy last week.

The next school board vacancy is scheduled to come up in two years.

In other action, the board also agreed to lease 52 acres from Larry and Barbara McClellan fpr use as a rubbish landfill where the city could dump non-hazardous materials such as limbs, concrete and wood products. The lease is part of a long-term plan to buy property for long-term use.
