Women’s Health, Fitness Day this Week at MSU

STARKVILLE, Miss. (Press Release) — National Women’s Health and Fitness Day will be celebrated Wednesday [Sept 24] at Mississippi State.

Open to campus and area women of all ages, the free, three-part program is designed to promote basic exercise and personal training.

Local sponsors include the university’s health education and wellness department, along with Starkville’s Downtown Martial Arts Academy, Firefly Yoga Studio, Max Muscle Sport’s Nutrition and Midtown Pilates.

Based in Libertyville, Illinois, the Women’s Health and Fitness Day organization bills itself as “the nation’s largest annual health promotion event for women of all ages.” The observation at MSU is among more than 1,000 taking place this year, according to the WHFD website. Local activities begin with a 6-7 a.m. yoga class at the Sanderson Center, followed with a 1-3 p.m. Fitness Fair on the Drill Field featuring representatives of local health and fitness vendors.

The Black Light Zumba dance and aerobic program is scheduled 7:30-9:30 p.m., also at the Sanderson Center.

Bondi Bands will be given to the first 50 participants registering at each session.

“This event is important because physical activity for women not only benefits their physical health, but their mental health as well,” said Lindsey Grant, a departmental graduate assistant. “Studies have proven that fitness and good nutrition improves academic performance.”

Health education information will be distributed at all three sessions. The yoga and Zumba programs also will offer free passes to AMPED, the Sanderson Center’s functional training zone.

Grant issued a personal invitation for area women to “come by the events to get some fun physical activity, as well as resources from popular local vendors for better nutrition and fitness.”
