STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — It’s been discussed for more than a decade. And by early next month, work may finally begin on a new city hall.

City crews will start tearing down the old Starkville Electric Department building in the next month to make way for a new city hall. In the meantime, the city is finalizing details with West Brothers Construction on financing and the city’s 20-year lease of the new building before construction starts this spring.

A citizen sued the city last year claiming aldermen violated open meetings laws in reaching the $8 milliondeal and avoiding a public referendum. A judge ruled in the city’s favor last month, clearing the way for the project.

Voters twice have rejected efforts to issue bonds to build a new municipal complex. The existing city hall eventually will be renovated into a new police department.
