STARKVILLE, Miss. – (WCBI) Some Starkville students are digging into a lesson that is both nutritious and delicious.

Nancy Sistrunk’s 4th grade class at Ward Stewart Elementary began plotting out the plan for their winter garden Wednesday.

The student also planted strawberries, spinach and several other salad crops.

Sam McClemore, who is an organic farmer and owner of Bountiful Harvest Farms in Starkville, is leading the class and will help them maintain their crops every week.

“We talk about all kinds of different things that relate to the garden. Vocabulary, science, math and the size of the plot that they are using and how much food they can grow. As well as just having a good time outside and playing in the soil.”

“You have to have sunlight, and water, and nutrients,” says student Blake Williams.

Funding for the Winter Garden was provided by the grant, From the Garden to the Table, as well as donations from local businesses.
