Wrecks Claim One, Injure Others

The Mississippi Highway Patrol continues to investigate a one vehicle accident in Union County that claimed the life of a New Albany woman.

Troopers responded to the scene at approximately 5a this morning, near mile marker 68, on US 78.

Upon arriving, it appeared Annie Jones, 38, was traveling west on US 78 in a 2001 Ford Expedition, when she apparently ran off the right side of the road, over corrected, and over turned several times.

She was ejected during the crash an died on the scene from injuries sustained during the crash.

In a separate accident, Troopers responded to a head-on collision on MS 172, near Iuka, at approximately 3pm, Tuesday.

Upon arriving it appeared Maria M Ramsey, 42, of Iuka, was traveling west bound in a 1999 Ford Taurus, when she apparently collided into a 2007 Ford Explorer, driven by Amber Thornton, 19, of Cherokee, Al.

Ramsey was transported by ambulance to Magnolia Regional Medical Center in Corinth with life-threatening injuries.

She remains in critical condition.

Thornton was also transported to Magnolia Regional Medical Center in Corinth with moderate injuries.

There were 3 other passengers in Thornton’s vehicle including 2 small children.

The adult passenger was taken to the hospital in Iuka with moderate injuries.

A 2 yr old was transported to LeBonheur in Memphis with serious but not life threatening injuries.

A 7 month old was not injured.

All the occupants in Thornton’s vehicle were properly restrained.

It was unclear if Ramsey was wearing a seatbelt because her vehicle burned as a result of the crash.

The accident is still under investigation.
