COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Learning about science can be exciting and intriguing, especially when taught by college students. Mississippi state’s youth environmental science program, also known as yes, met with students of Fairview aerospace and science magnet school to explore different area’s of science.

As students prepare for their fifth grade science assessment test taking place in may, teachers are looking for ways to help their students grasp challenging material in new ways.

Fairview science teachers welcomed Mississippi state’s -yes- program to help open the doors to science topics such as weather, biomes, and mammals.

Kimberly Gathinigs says, “We want them to gave a hands on approach to learning about things in their environment.”

The program is geared towards upper elementary school students for hands-on learning.

Graduate students come out to the schools and provide demonstrations & allow students to particpate in hands on activities.

There are many subjects covered by the program, that the teacher can choose from, picking what they feel best meets their classes needs.

And by the looks of it, it seems to be working.

Jordan Rowan, a student at Fairview says, “A tropical climate is wet and its has many animals. Such as deer, geese, birds, and many things else. I also learned that a dessert is dry and it never rains but it gets cold at night.”

Although it is an educational program, teachers gain more then just information

Gathings goes on to say, “A love for science and to also take back the knowledge for learning outside of the box.”

The Youth Environmental Science program received third place in the Gulf Guardian Award in the environmental justice and cultural diversity category. The Gulf Of Mexico program gives the award annually.
