BELDEN, Miss. (WCBI) — Things continue to look up at TCPS for the Eagles.

After reinstating the school’s varsity football program last year, the Eagles were able to win two games in their first season back on the gridiron.

That has head coach Shaune Holiday expecting more in the team’s second year back in MHSAA and the optimism continues to rise.

“Last year, we had a good year;” coach Holiday said. “Considering we didn’t have football the year before, we did well. We’re looking to build and take these young men to the next level.”

TCPS remains in position to improve outside of division play in Class 1A of MHSAA which Holiday says will be a luxury to have as they build towards the future.

“We’ll be independent for the next two years,” coach Holiday said. “That gives us leeway to get bigger, faster and stronger and also to get our numbers up so in two years we’ll go back into 1A football.”

Coach Holiday also isn’t shy about his team’s expectations as they go into a new season.

“We’re looking for 8-9 wins. All our guys have come out and done 7 on 7 and hit the weight room hard this summer so we’re really looking for the kids to take a hold of the game and improve.”

TCPS will start the season at home versus Tipton-Rosemark on August 21st before visiting Oak Hill Academy the following week.
